Click HERE to see a list of the things we can help you with.. Hi, my name is Harry Technology has come a long way since I started as a computer programmer in the late '80s. The things computers can do today were just a dream back then. In fact, technology has become so user-friendly that in recent years, I helped my 83-year-old mother learn to use a laptop and send photos and text messages on her phone, something she thought was unattainable. The joy she felt while mastering what seemed like alien technology was beautiful to witness. She even surprised herself with how much she could achieve, like sending text messages to her grandchildren, using Google for answers, taking photos with her iPhone, keeping a digital diary, video chatting with friends and family, finding cooking recipes on YouTube, and staying in touch through Facebook and WhatsApp. The point is, modern technology is getting easier to learn. And having successfully taught my mother some cool tricks, I helped her friends, uncles, aunts, and neighbours. They all enjoyed learning something new, and I got a real kick out of teaching them. So I thought, why not show more seniors how to make the most of technology? It's such a useful tool - particularly for older folks who may have reduced mobility. It offers many conveniences like online shopping, communication with family, watching videos, social media, email, text messaging, online learning, entertainment, and navigation - the list goes on... It takes a bit of preparation, like installing apps and setting up accounts, but once that's done, it takes just a little bit of guidance for seniors with no computer experience at all, to learn surprisingly fast. The feeling you will get when you master tech, is that same feeling of exhilaration, and sense of accomplishment you had when you first learned to ride a bike. I'm here to help you every step of the way, offering support and guidance in a friendly, relaxed manner, so you can confidently explore and enjoy the world of technology! • Frequently Asked Questions | SeniorsTechAndTea

FAQ General Questions Always be cautious of unsolicited emails or messages asking for personal or financial information. Ensure websites are secure (look for "https" in the URL) and regularly update your passwords. If something seems suspicious, don't click on any links or download anything. Q: I'm worried about online scams. How can I stay safe online? Try clearing your browser history and deleting unused apps or files. Ensure your device's software is updated, and consider restarting your device. If it continues, it might be time to consult a tech expert or consider an upgrade. Q: My device is slow; what should I do? There are many platforms like Zoom, Skype, and FaceTime. Choose one, download the app or program, sign up, and then you can "call" or "invite" your family using their email or phone number. We can guide you step-by-step if you'd like! Q: How do I set up a video call with my family? On most devices, go to "Settings", then "Display" or "Accessibility", and you'll find options to adjust text size. You can increase it to a level that's comfortable for you. Q: How can I increase the text size on my phone or computer for easier reading? The cloud is online storage, which means your photos, documents, and data are stored on the internet instead of just on your device. It's useful for backup and accessing your files from different devices. While not essential, it can be a handy tool. Q: What's the cloud, and do I need it? It depends on what you're looking for. Facebook is popular for connecting with family and friends, while Instagram is more photo-centric. If you're into professional networking, LinkedIn might be best. Start with one, get comfortable, and then explore others if you wish. Q: I've heard a lot about social media. Which platform should I start with? Regular updates are recommended as they often include security improvements and new features. If possible, set your device to update automatically or check for updates once a month. Q: How often should I update my software or apps? Use strong, unique passwords for each online account. Be cautious about sharing personal information, especially on social media. Adjust privacy settings on platforms to control who sees your data, and consider using a reputable antivirus program. Q: I'm worried about my privacy online. How can I protect it? Yes! There are apps like Kindle or platforms like Audible for audiobooks. You can purchase or borrow digital books and read or listen to them directly on your device. Q: Can I read books on my tablet or computer? You can use the cloud, as mentioned earlier, or external storage devices like USB drives or external hard drives. It's a good idea to have backups in at least two places in case one fails. Q: How do I backup my photos and important documents? Wi-Fi allows you to connect devices to the internet wirelessly within your home. If you have multiple devices or want to use the internet in different rooms, having Wi-Fi is very beneficial. Q: What's Wi-Fi, and do I need it at home? Streaming means watching TV shows, movies, or listening to music in real-time over the internet, without having to download the entire file first. Services like Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube are popular streaming platforms. Q: I've heard of "streaming" TV shows and movies. What does that mean? A tablet is a portable touchscreen device, while a laptop is a foldable computer with a keyboard. Tablets are typically used for casual tasks like browsing, reading, or watching videos, while laptops can handle more complex tasks and software. Q: What's the difference between a tablet and a laptop? An "app" or application is a type of software designed for specific tasks or entertainment, which you can download onto your smartphone or tablet. There are apps for everything - from banking to games to weather updates. Q: What's an "app"? Be wary of unexpected emails with links or attachments, especially if they ask for personal or financial details. Check the sender's email address for any oddities or misspellings. When in doubt, contact the supposed sender directly using a known phone number or email. Q: How do I know if an email is spam or legitimate? Wi-Fi uses a local network to connect to the internet, typically within a home or business. "Data" often refers to mobile data from a cellular provider, allowing internet access when you're away from Wi-Fi. Q: What's the difference between "Wi-Fi" and "data"? A smart home uses interconnected devices, like thermostats, lights, and security cameras, which you can control remotely via a smartphone or voice commands. It's about enhancing convenience and efficiency in your household. Q: I've heard of "smart homes". What are they? It can be, but it's crucial to shop from reputable retailers. Check for "https" in the website's URL, which indicates security. Always avoid giving out unnecessary personal information, and use credit cards over debit cards for better fraud protection. Q: Is online shopping safe? Syncing means updating multiple devices to ensure they have the same data. For example, if you add a contact on your phone, syncing might update your computer to include that contact too. Q: What does "synchronising" or "syncing" mean in tech? Absolutely! There are many online platforms like Coursera, Udemy, or even YouTube tutorials that offer courses on technology and its use, tailored for every skill level.
